Poet and academic Philip Neilsen was born in Brisbane in 1949 and attended the University of Queensland, gaining a doctorate in English. Beginning his teaching career there, he then founded the creative writing program at the Queensland University of Technology in 1996. Neilsen has been a novelist, short story writer and editor with a primary interest in poetry, which has been published in several journals and anthologies. His work has been acclaimed by Les Murray and John Kinsella, among others, and has won prizes such as the Philip Bacon Ekphrasis Poetry Award and the Melbourne Poets Union International Poetry Competition
