About the School of Physical, Environmental and Mathematical Sciences
The School of Physical, Environmental and Mathematical Sciences encompasses the disciplines of Chemistry, Geography, Mathematics, Statistics, Oceanography and Physics. The School of PEMS is one of four Schools at UNSW@ADFA, the academic component of the Australian Defence Force Academy located in Canberra.
The School's activities in teaching and learning are organised around five undergraduate program areas; Chemistry, Geography, Mathematics and Statistics, Oceanography and Physics - and in related graduate coursework and research degree programs.
The primary undergraduate teaching role of the School is in the Bachelor of Science degree. Majors are offered in all disciplines. Undergraduate programs at UNSW@ADFA and PEMS Courses by Subject Area can be found in the UNSW on-line handbook. Arts students can also choose to study some Science courses in their degree and, in particular, the major in Geography is a popular option for Arts students as it provides a bridge between the social and natural sciences. Geography courses at UNSW@ADFA can be studied as either Arts or Science courses. The School also contributes very significantly to teaching in the Bachelor of Engineering, Technology and Business degrees. Students should be aware of the assumed knowledge required for First-Year Chemistry, Mathematics, Oceanography, Physics, Engineering and Technology. Further information on assumed knowledge is available for students who left school some time ago.
At the postgraduate level, UNSW@ADFA offers research programs leading to MPhil, MSc, MA and PhD degrees. Research is conducted in the School of PEMS in a range of research fields with well-equipped research laboratories and infrastructure in all discipline areas. Scholarships are available for postgraduates to study in the School of PEMS.
The School also contributes to postgraduate coursework programs in Engineering Science, Management Studies and Operations Research and Statistics. The School of PEMS list of Postgraduate Courses by Subject Area can be found in the UNSW on-line handbook.
